On September 30, 1945, John wrote: “All set to return home. Boarding ship #A-47 for the States. 15 ships leaving per day now with 12 passengers each. Normally the trip should take 3 days. Overnight (6 1/2 hours) to Kwajalein and rest all day. Take-off at night again for 9-10 hour flight to Hawaii. Then an 11 hour or less hop to Mather Field, CA (outside San Francisco). I shall not spend much time in CA, whence I shall be flown “trooptained” to Denver (Ft. Logan) for separation from the service.”
